  • Editorial: SimCity, Diablo 3 and a review of customer service

    nerdology:

Alexander Sliwinski has opinions that are directly in line with mine about the SimCity server debacle that has been sweeping the internet.

With SimCity and Diablo 3, I think the already tempestuous machine of game reviews in this industry has changed forever, and as a collective we haven’t yet determined how to proceed. SimCity and Diablo 3 aren’t just games, they are also services. The question: Should these games be reviewed separately from their service elements or should they be reviewed in combination?

    …

I do wonder how long as a collective we can keep arguing about how unfair it is to judge a game by how it treats paying customers, especially as we keep being told that games are now a service.

Now listening // “The Cool” - Lupe Fiasco (2007) still listen to this classic, yup I said it lol. This record defines my senior year of High school, didn’t care for the singles (ie Dumb it down) too much but other the tracks on the album were superb from production, concepts, lyrics and overall story line. Could honestly say only a few have a great debut and sophomore album w/ Nas and Ye’ right there also. I can’t speak much on his recent music or antics but def appreciate the catalogue he has contributed. #musica

26 years ago today, Beastie Boys’ Licensed to Ill became the first rap album to top the U.S. Chart. It stayed at Number One for 7 weeks. Take a look back at our original 1986 review of the album.

“Good beer is work! Appreciating beer is work! (At least, on this day.) And, highest of all, there is the motto printed above the door on Glaser’s building, glanced at while stepping into the winter evening: ‘Art is Work.’”

Facebook - Behind The News Feed Redesign

Facebook’s overall new look fits with the current love of clean, image-heavy sites — it’s drawn comparisons to competitor Google+ — but it’s also pulling specific features from mobile: a rail on the left-hand side with links to messages, events, or available friends echoes its app design. The new News Feed is launching on the web version today, with a mobile version coming in the next few weeks; a waiting list is live at facebook.com/newsfeed. Perhaps cognizant of the protest over almost any new feature, Facebook says it will run a “careful and slow” rollout.

In January, we began following Magda Biernat and Ian Webster’s journey from Antarctica to Alaska. After returning from Antarctica, Magda and Ian took a plane to Buenos Aires, a boat to Uruguay, and bus to Córdoba. From there, they flew to Rio de Janeiro, landing in Brazil on February 8th, the first day of Carnaval. They are currently on their way from Iguassu to Brasília, Brazil’s capital city, which they describe as “the late visionary architect Oscar Niemeyer’s masterpiece: a modernist city raised from nothing in the Brazilian wilderness.” After that, they’ll head north, to the Amazon jungle. Above are a selection of images from Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil, with captions by Biernat and Webster. Click-through for a slideshow of their photos, and check back in April for another update: http://nyr.kr/13FLq4b
